Normal Lens
"The most commonly used camera lens. AKA...Standard Lens."
The standard / normal lens commonly has a focal length between 24 and 70mm. This gives it roughly the perspective and angle of view of the human eye.
They are great for day to day photographs. Using this lens allows photographers to show what they see before they look through the viewfinder. This is the “what you see is what you get” approach.
Depth of Field
The
depth of field
of these lenses is fairly wide so it is easy to keep everything in focus as long as the subject is not very close to the camera. They can usually hold an infinite depth of field about 10-15 feet and beyond.
Altered aperture settings can still be used to narrow the depth of field in order to blur a busy foreground and background, but the subject cannot be very close to background that needs to be blurred. If a narrower depth of field is necessary, a telephoto lens will be needed.
These lenses are also good to use when practicing the control settings of the camera such as shutter and film speed. These, along with aperture settings, are what control the exposure of the photograph.
